Where does the club go diving?
We primarily dive around the UK, using our club boat moored at the world-class Portland Marina in Dorset (host of the 2012 Olympic sailing events). We also run regular international expeditions; recent trips include the Red Sea, Philippines, and Malta, with future adventures planned for Micronesia, Iceland, and Kenya.

What is UK diving actually like? (Is it dark and cold?)
Far from it! UK diving is vibrant and world-renowned. Our waters are home to incredible wrecks and reefs teeming with life—from soft corals and sponges to seals, lobsters, and colorful fish. While different from the tropics, the sheer diversity of marine life and history beneath the waves makes every dive a unique adventure.

What is the water temperature?
UK waters fluctuate seasonally. Temperatures are lowest from January to March, so we typically begin our sea diving season in April. By September, the water reaches a comfortable 18–19°C. Regardless of the month, we always wear appropriate thermal protection (wetsuits or drysuits) to stay comfortable.

How do I stay warm underwater?
Divers use one of two options:
– Wetsuits: Tight-fitting neoprene suits that trap a thin layer of water warmed by your body. These are generally more affordable.
– Drysuits: Completely waterproof suits with seals at the neck and wrists. You wear thermal layers underneath to stay dry and warm. These are ideal for longer UK seasons.

How much does it cost to learn to dive?
To join Ariel Sub Aqua Club (ASAC), you must first be a BBC Club Member.
– Ocean Diver Course: £341
– Annual Fees: £50 (ASAC) + £71 (BSAC)
Included: Digital training materials, pool tuition, and open-water instruction.
Not Included: Personal gear (mask, fins, suit), travel, accommodation, food, air fills, and inland site entry fees.

What equipment will I need to buy?
ASAC supplies most of the essential equipment required during your training course, except for a drysuit or wetsuit, which you can rent. We highly recommend purchasing some gear before our open water training sessions, such as a hood, gloves, mask, and fins. After you qualify, consider buying your own wetsuit or drysuit to ensure a proper fit and the best possible comfort in the water.

How much does a wetsuit or drysuit cost?
A new wetsuit (including boots) typically starts around £400, while drysuits start at £550. While second-hand bargains are available online, please consult us before purchasing any used kit to ensure it is safe and fit for purpose.

What if I can’t make the scheduled training dates?
Our pool sessions are held on fixed dates. If you miss them, we can add you to a waiting list for a potential second intake later in the year. While open-water sessions are more flexible, we highly recommend learning alongside your cohort for the best social and educational experience.

What other skills can I learn?
Beyond basic diving, ASAC offers a variety of specialized courses, including:
– Boat Handling: Learn to pilot the club boat safely
– Marine Life Appreciation: Identify the species and ecosystems you encounter
– Lifesaving Skills: Including Oxygen Administration and Defibrillator use.

Are there fitness or medical requirements?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but a reasonable level of fitness is required. All trainees must complete a medical self-declaration. If you have a pre-existing condition listed, you may need clearance from a BSAC medical referee before starting.

Who are the instructors?
All our instructors are dedicated volunteers who teach because they love the sport. We don’t take a salary—the reward is seeing a trainee’s face after their first successful sea dive (though a cup of tea or a cold drink is always appreciated!).
